Why We Should't Neglect Meeting Together: Encouragement, Growth, and Hope

As Christians, we are part of a family - the family of God. This family is not bound by biology or geography but by the shared experience of salvation through Jesus Christ. One of the most beautiful expressions of this family dynamic is the gathering of believers, the church. Yet, in our increasingly busy and individualistic society, it can be easy to neglect meeting together. However, the Bible reminds us of the importance of fellowship.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT) says, "Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near."" These verses highlight three key reasons why meeting together is vital.

1. Encouragement for the Journey
Life can be challenging, and faith is often tested. When we gather together as believers, we are given the opportunity to encourage one another. A kind word, a shared prayer, or a heartfelt conversation can strengthen us in ways we might not even realise. Fellowship is a source of mutual encouragement that helps us press on in our walk with God.

2. Growth in Love and Good Works
Gathering together is a way to inspire and motivate each other to live out our faith in practical ways. When we meet, we share ideas, resources, and opportunities to serve. This mutual sharing helps us grow in acts of love and good works. It's through community that we learn to practise love, patience, forgiveness, and generosity.

3. Preparation for Christ's Return
The writer of Hebrews reminds us to keep meeting together "especially now that the day of his return is drawing near." As we await Christ's return, our gatherings are a way to stay focused on what truly matters. Together, we celebrate the hope we have in Jesus, and together, we prepare our hearts for His glorious return.

In a world that often prioritises convenience and individualism, meeting together as a church family might sometimes feel like an inconvenience. But it's a vital expression of our faith and an essential part of our spiritual growth. Let's commit to prioritising fellowship, remembering that every gathering is an opportunity to encourage, grow, and prepare together as we journey towards eternity.

This week, consider who you could encourage by showing up. Your presence in the family of God matters more than you know.
